Description of the Small Project

The project addresses the pressing need for small-scale farmers to access affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly farming solutions. The common challenge in the programme area (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro) is the lack of accessible agricultural technologies for SMEs, particularly for sustainable biointensive vegetable farming.

Current tools are often too complex, costly, or unsuitable for small-scale operations, limiting farmers’ capacity to scale production sustainably. This is compounded by limited access to innovative technologies, which hampers competitiveness.

Objective

To develop and introduce an affordable, easy-to-use, autonomous tool carrier that helps small-scale farmers increase productivity while practicing sustainable agriculture.

Expected impact

  • Reduced manual labour
  • Improved efficiency
  • Increased profitability
  • Stronger competitiveness of SMEs
  • Benefits for rural economies, biodiversity, and climate resilience

Outputs / Deliverables

  • Development of the Autonomous Tool Carrier for Sustainable Biointensive Vegetable Production
  • Pilot production and testing across different regions to ensure adaptability and gather user feedback
  • External expertise for technical development and market entry
  • Market research and outreach to introduce the product to new markets through direct engagement with farmers and cooperatives

Target groups: Farmers, agricultural SMEs, and cooperatives in the programme area. Rural communities will also benefit from more economic activity, job creation, and stronger local food systems.

Approach and Cross-Border Necessity

The project is based on cross-border collaboration, leveraging the expertise of partners:

  • GREEN TOOLS TECH – engineering and production
  • UPBEAT HUB – automation and technology
  • AGRONOVA – market integration and commercialization

Cooperation is essential as it addresses shared challenges across the region and ensures adaptability to different agricultural contexts. By pooling resources and knowledge, the project promotes cross-regional innovation and strengthens SME competitiveness.

What’s New / Original

  • Autonomous technology at lower cost: Uses existing irrigation systems for navigation instead of expensive GPS/AI, making it accessible to small-scale farmers.
  • Open-source model: Tool plans and software will be open-source, enabling global collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Biointensive farming focus: Designed specifically to support biointensive methods that promote biodiversity, soil health, and yield.
